Having worked in the Pottery Industry as a painter for the majority of my life, creativity cannot fail to be a large part of my make up.
I grew up with a mother who painted in Watercolour. I enjoyed drawing and painting and finding work in a World-renown Pottery kept me involved in the creative life. A return to relief printing in 2019 cemented my commitment to the medium.
Linocut started for me as a child. Introduced to the magic of printmaking by my friends mother, I remember marvelling at her work, fascinated by the process and the result. I returned to it later in life after finding that painting as an occupation had somewhat diminished the joy of painting as a hobby.
So, carefully cutting each intricate block with gouges, printing the image onto beautiful Somerset paper and hand-printing on a Gunning No. 3 press became my joy. It never fails to provide me with excitement and anticipation at finding out just what the image will be and of course, each print is unique even within the same print run. Now, being a printmaker and artist is a large part of my everyday life.

The natural world, surrounding us here at Red Cottage, is a constant source of inspiration and enjoyment. Each season providing a new aspect through which to view nature and a different feel to our lives here.
I am constantly seeing things, places, plants that I want to put into my work. Maybe something from my daily life, maybe a small fern growing from the stone wall, once the door of a falling down barn. They lodge, like tiny seedlings, waiting to be shown the sun and to appear somewhere in amongst a design.
Using fine gouges the grey, hessian backed lino block is cut away, leaving only areas that are to pick up ink and be printed.
Blocks and take days and even weeks to cut, any mistakes are permanent and cannot be rectified.
Cutting away the block to print a different coloured layer (cutting away for each colour-sometimes 14 layers are applied) on top of the others makes a reduction print and is how a skilled Printmaker can make beautiful, coloured images like this Redwing and Fieldfare.
The inked lino block is laid onto the press bed, paper laid gently on top and run through the press, transferring the ink from the block to the paper.
Using the Gunning etching press to put the final layer onto The Aviator.
